Most Common Kitchen Hood Problem

This is the most common kitchen hood issue that homeowners face. Please discuss this with your IDs if it affects you!

Just last week, 2 new homeowners asked us if its normal and “standard” for the kitchen hood to stick out, and be at head-hitting height.

If 2 homeowners can ask us in 1 week, it means many of you guys are likely facing the same issue.

The answer is - yes, there is a default “standard” but you can customise.

I mean, the main point of doing carpentry is because it is customisable right? Not happy with something, just adjust. So as a homeowner, what should I be adjusting and what should I tell my carpenter/ID to customise?

The “head-hitting” problem boils down to two core dimensions, depth and height.

1) Get the Right Depth

Top kitchen cabinet is either 350 or 400mm in depth, while bottom kitchen cabinet is 600mm. This is so that you don’t hit your head on the top cabinet when you are in your kitchen.

Kitchen hood has a depth of 450-550mm, or even more by design.

This is why homeowners might “hit” their head, as the kitchen hood juts out.

That’s why, we always recommend homeowners to find their kitchen hood first, get the dimensions, before fabricating the carpentry.

2) Adjusting Height

Standard setup goes like this:

  • Upper cabinet starts around 1.5m from the floor.

    • Bottom cabinet height: 900mm

    • Backsplash height: 600mm

Average Singaporean height is about 1.6-1.7m, so you can see why most of us the hood is just right to hit your head.

The solution is simply to install your hood higher. Alternatively, find designs that incorporate the hood into the upper cabinet rather than one that sticks out or find one that is sunken.

From our experience, once you use the kitchen for a while, you’ll naturally avoid it. It is human reflex.

But it is also understandable why homeowners might not be used to it, especially seeing it the first time.

If you want to mitigate the risk of even hitting your head to begin with, then just install it higher from the get go.

Then again, try not to install it “too high”, as it then defeats the purpose of having a hood in the first place!
