The Easy Fix for Water Rotting Kitchen Sink
The kitchen is one of the messiest and wettest parts of the house.
The kitchen sink in particular is a headache for many homeowners. It is constantly wet from the washing, and over time the wood at the kitchen sink might rot due to the water.

For homeowners looking to stay in their home long-term, here’s a good and cost-effective solution that you can ask your ID/contractor about!
This is the lower portion of the kitchen cabinet, often referred to as the carcass.
Looking at the two closely – they are made from different types of “wood”. The left one, where the sink will be, is actually a foamboard (white), while the right one is your typical plywood (brown).
Plywood vs. Foamboard
So what’s the difference? I asked my contractor to pour some water over the two. As you can see, the plywood absorbs the water but the foamboard stays completely dry. (see our tiktok for the full video)
That’s why it’s usually recommended to do this for the sink area, since this part of the kitchen is always exposed to moisture.
Alternatively, some homeowners go for a concrete sink support.
Here’s a summary of the various options:
For a small ~$300 increase in price, you reap the benefits of a more sustainable kitchen with lesser problems in the future. Very very worth.
So if you’re worried about your kitchen getting damp and the wood rotting over time, it’s worth checking with your ID if they offer foamboard for the sink area, and how much the top-up is.
You can consider the other alternatives, such as the concrete sink support, or even aluminium cabinet that we’ll cover in another blog post.
But frankly, we find this foamboard option to be the most balanced.
