What Is Tile or Vinyl Skirting? Should You Get It?

Have you ever wondered what that little strip at the bottom of your wall is for? And should you get it during your reno?

Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.

This little strip is called skirting.

It’s available for both tiles and vinyl flooring.

Some of you might know it by its Chinese name, 踢脚线 (literally “leg kick line”).

The name says it all - the bottom of the wall is the easiest part to get dirty or damaged, whether you’re kicking into it, bumping it with furniture, or knocking it while vacuuming.

The skirting is there to take damage on behalf of your wall, allowing it to look “cleaner” in the long run.

Some people like it, some don’t - there’s no definitive right or wrong.

But there are some things we want you to keep in mind!

1) Cost

There’s additional labour fee involved. It’s not super expensive, low hundreds - but make sure that it is written in the quotation if you want it.

If you don’t see it, it’s not included.

This is a common “dispute” between homeowners and IDs, which is why we created this post!

2) Practical Considerations

Due to how skirting sticks out, it means that often you won’t be able to flush your furniture or bed fully against the wall. Some people have massive OCD panic attacks when this happens :D

3) Aesthetics

Lastly, there is an aesthetic consideration - whether the skirting matches your wall or floor colour, but that’s your ID’s job to advise.

At the end of the day, we want to emphasise that it’s really a preference thing.

But if you do want skirting, make sure it is reflected black and white in your quotation.

Better to avoid that “eh, why don’t have need pay extra?” moment.
