Why We Put Reno Prices Upfront for Home Tours?
Sometime back, we received this comment regarding renovation costing.
These are the comments that make it so so hard to fix the renovation industry.
Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.
It came from one of our YouTube home tour videos, where I always insist on showing the total reno cost right in the title.
And for this project where the comment came from? It costs $80k.
The frustration with this type of comments is that it uses an “authority” (“construction specialist for many years”) to mislead homeowners that they are getting tok for their renovation (“won’t cost more than $40k”).
Where is the substantiation??
Imagine you are on a $5k/month payroll, and someone says you are only worth $2.5k/month, without understanding the facts involved?
This is the reason why we insist on putting the cost upfront.
Because that’s the truth. Homeowners need to know what kind of house you get for what kind of money.
Here are the actual excerpts from the quotations:
Total: $3920
There is no way on earth you can say the ID is expensive, when tiling the bathroom is $3,900, and the vanity cabinet is going at $160 per foot run.
Honestly, in this project, given the ID Ray’s experience and qualities, some might even say his price is cheap.
Our goal is simple - to educate.
We want homeowners to be informed and realistic—so they don’t kena overcharged by inflated reno quotes, but neither do they think renovation should be whatever low number they think it should be.
There is a reason why most home tours don’t put renovation cost, or they simply lowball the amount.
The reality is that IDs need to earn. 20% margin is very fair from our POV, and then we vary based on their experience, design flair etc.
And our role is to make sure firms stay within these guidelines while protecting both the good IDs and the homeowners.
But if you’re the kind who thinks IDs shouldn’t even get 10% ah, then don’t watch and don’t ask for recommendations. You will be better off designing your own house, because that’s being unfair to the good IDs out there.
