Why Your Fridge Sticks Out

This is one of the most surprising questions we are asked during kitchen renovation.

“Eh Chris, why my fridge sticking out? Why my ID never flush it?”

Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.

A lot of homeowners think it’s a design flaw, cause aesthetically it makes more sense for it to be flushed to the wall.

But it’s actually very normal, very common, and there’s a very practical reason for that.

In a typical kitchen compartment, the depth will be 600mm, same as your bottom kitchen cabinet.

But your fridges are typically 700–750mm in depth.

Hence by default, the fridge will always stick out 10–15cm beyond the cabinet line.

Why It Can’t Be Flushed

Then you may ask, “Then why my ID don’t want to just make my depth the same as the fridge??”

It’s simple because your fridge door needs clearance to open and close.

If you build the compartment exactly to fridge depth and width, the door cannot swing open fully.

It will get stuck in the middle.

Hence, that extra space is intentional, not a defect.

What You Can Do

Most homes actually just leave it as it is.

Lame right? But after a while, you really won’t even notice the fridge sticking out.

But lets say you really really cannot tahan and it’s really an eyesore.

You can build wider, so that it accounts for the swinging of the door. But this might make it look asymmetrical and “hole-y”.

Lastly, if you really really really cannot tahan, there are some fridge out there built to make it seamless to the cabinets.

Ask the salesperson, or ask your ID.

TLDR

Fridge sticking out is common and normal, not a mistake.

It’s about practicality - doors need space to open.

If you really can’t take it, ask your ID. There are solutions out there.

But over time really you won’t even notice it.
