Maybe the Worst Mistake an ID can Make
This might really be one of the worst mistake an ID can make.
And it is entirely avoidable.
And that’s why homeowners, no matter how tiring, you always need to check your quotation. It can literally save you thousands.
Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.
A homeowner sent us this quotation to review after meeting with some of our IDs/contractors.
See if you can spot what’s wrong with it.
Look at the first two lines - the laminated (10.2) top and (10.3) bottom kitchen cabinets.
(10.3) Bottom cabinet looks fine—11.5 ft for $1,840. Computes a reasonable unit rate of $160pfr, and a carpentry length of 3.5m, entirely possible
(10.2) Then you see the top cabinet - 115 ft for $18,400.
Hold up. 115 ft? That’s like 35 meters long? Basically the length of a 10 storey building?
Obviously, it was a clerical error.
But here’s the problem: the homeowner took one look, thought “too far off,” and didn’t bother to go through the rest.
Wasted. Because if you actually checked the costing, it was reasonable. But thanks to that one decimal point mistake, the total was off by nearly $20,000. Which sane homeowner is going to sign off on that?
This is why I keep repeating my favourite tagline: Trust, but verify.
Homeowners, errors like this do happen. Don’t be lazy and assume that the numbers are always right. What’s more this quotation template is actually generated using a system tool.
And IDs, if you let something so basic slip, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. You lose the client, you waste your own time and hurts your reputation, all because you didn’t double‑check.
Some mistakes you can patch up. This kind? Fatal.
