Waterproofing is one of the most important steps in renovation.

Done in wet areas of the house, it prevents water from seeping into your walls, and into your neighbours house downstairs.

That’s why you need to make sure that:

Why Waterproofing Matters

There are 3 common “wet areas” that require waterproofing:
(a) Bathrooms
(b) Kitchen
(c) Open Balconies

These areas are considered “wet” due to high water usage / touchpoints, as compared to other parts such as your living room.

Without proper waterproofing done for these areas, moisture can slowly penetrate the floor and walls.

Worst case? It leaks into your neighbour’s unit below and next thing you know, you’re negotiating repair costs and repainting schedules.

However, by applying the waterproofing solution, it forms a membrane that prevents water from seeping through, thereby protecting you (and your neighbour).

How Much Does Waterproofing Cost?

It depends on the size of the area, but it shouldn’t veer too far away from these numbers:

(a) Bathrooms ($250 - $350)
(b) Kitchen ($400 - $550)
(c) Open Balconies (either lump sum or by square area)

Not too expensive, and definitely worth the money.

How Does It Affect My Reno?

One, make sure that it is quoted for within all your quotations.

Two, during your reno, request for visual proof, or a water ponding test (subjected to additional $).

Three, make sure it is done before your tiles go up.

It is not that expensive.

Make sure you are quoted for it, and it is really done during your reno.
