What is a Sink Support?
Sink support is yet another “hidden from plain sight“ structure, so many new homeowners might not know.
But for the experienced older generation, this is one of their must‑haves for their kitchen.

What’s A Sink Support?
Made of concrete, and covered in tiles, sink support plays two important role:
A) It supports the weight of your sink
B) It makes the carpentry around the wet area of the kitchen water-resistant.
The latter being the more important factor behind its adoption.

The kitchen sink area has one of the highest water flow in the house.
I mean that’s where you literally wash the dishes, boil tap water, pump out dirty water - the list goes on.
Given the volume, can you imagine if there’s a leak or if the pipe bursts there?
The mere moistness means that over time, your carpentry around it might corrode.
This is what the sink support is used for - “trapping” the water / moist inside, and thus protecting the structure.
What It Costs
Similar to the mortar base we covered previously, a sink support must cost under $1,000.
In fact, most fall in the $600–$800 range.
Not toooooo crazy for something that protects the integrity of your structure.
Is This The Best Solution?
It might not be the “best”, but it is definitely the most “reliable”.
Previously we shared an alternative solution - using waterproof foamboard in that area of the sink.

This foamboard is cheaper at $300-ish and does a similar job.
However, it definitely does not support your sink weight, and it is definitely not as sturdy in keeping water out.
Just think of one as a bulletproof vest, and another as a freaking iron man suit.
But of course, some people just go with none.
After all, some carpentry can last 10+ years without any of these add-ons.

If you cook often, plan to stay long, and really want a piece of mind - 100%.
