The Basics
What even is a backsplash??
Backsplash is the area just behind your kitchen counter. The wall that always kena when oil splashes during cooking.
The point of a backsplash is simple: when you cook → oil splashes → you need something that protects your wall and cleans easily.
What’s The Best Material?
The lame, but real, answer is: it depends on your preference.
Generally speaking, you have 4 options.
Option 1: No Backsplash
Just skip this.
Cannot be you don’t have any backsplash right…?
Oil splashes don’t care about your paint.
So unless you 100% won’t cook, and 100% need to save this money, just ignore this option.
Option 2: Stone - Same as Countertop
Foolproof, failsafe, cannot go wrong one.
The idea is simple, use the same stone as your countertop, and it creates a perfectly practical and aesthetically uniform look for your kitchen.

If you ok to think a little more, then you can consider other stone designs.
But i’d say 90% of homeowners who choose stone for their countertop, choose the same one for their backsplash. Don’t overthink it.
The main drawback is the cost. This option is the most expensive.
Stone costs around ~$150 per foot run (depending on grade), so assuming a 10ft kitchen, you are looking at $1,500 for your countertop, and $1,500 for your backsplash. A total cost of $3,000.
That’s why we say - solid, pretty, but the price maybe not very pretty.
Option 3: Glass
Cheaper than stone, around $600 or so, does the job perfectly.
But it’s really not chio.
The normal glass backsplash has this green tint, which when seen from far, makes the kitchen abit dated.
However, there are now coloured glass options! Top up $100 or so, if you can match the coloured glass to your laminates or countertop, it still looks super sleek while being cost-effective!
It’s really a solid option.
Option 4: Tiles
Last and definitely not least, tiles.
They cost roughly the same as glass, and you have so many more options.
It is definitely under-rated and under-discussed in our opinion!
Stone and glass you have rather limited designs, compared to tiles.
Walk into a tile shop, and there’s endless possibilities. Every tile design can potentially find a place in your home one way or another.
White subway tiles, mosaic patterns, done right tiles can give the kitchen so much more personality.
The main issue is the grout.
Same as your bathroom tiles, when grout meets water, over time it turns dirty.
So if you are a heavy cooker, this is maybe not for you.
But if you don’t cook that often and really want a pretty kitchen, you really should explore tiles!!

Backsplash is the thing that protects your kitchen walls from splashes and dirt.
The “best” backsplash depends on your preference.
