At our recent Reno Event, we interviewed a few IDs on what they thought was the most underrated thing in reno.

We were quite surprised that the answer was almost unanimous: False Ceiling.

What is False Ceiling?

False ceiling, as the name suggests, is basically creating a fake ceiling from your original one.

This is done through plasterboard and it lowers the height of the ceiling.

For example, a normal HDB height is 2.6m. With false ceiling, it is now maybe 2.45m.

From the interviews with the IDs, and our experience, when homeowners are looking to save cost, the 1st thing they cut is always false ceiling becuase “aiya, waste money lah,” or “not necessary”.

But honestly, false ceiling is extremely important.

It not only hides the wires & electrical stuff to give it the clean look.

But is arguably the glue that transforms the whole vibe of your house.

Lighting and Ambience

Ever wonder how some of the aesthetic cafes and houses you see got the nice nice diffused light?

Most of the time, the answer lies in the false ceiling.

With it, you can install different variety of lights such as cove lights, recessed lights and track lights.

With it, you can craft out curves and shapes on the ceiling, adding personality and especially useful for soft or wabi sabi looks.

With it, you can create specific places with intent through the drop in the ceiling height.

Without it, you’re stuck with ceiling fixtures that may often look flat and uninspired.

Should homeowners then cut it?

We do understand why homeowners cut it.

It is truly not an essential part of reno, when you compare false ceiling to like tiling or something.

But if your goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing place, more often than not you’ll need false ceiling.

And cutting it to save cost, but thereafter have a “flatter” place, we’d rather you just don’t do one or two more carpentry iykwim?

Of course, some might argue you don’t need false ceiling for an aesthetic place. True, but why restrict the options you have to begin with?

TLDR

False ceiling may look optional, but it’s the silent hero of reno.

It hides clutter, enhances ambience, and creates spaces with intent.

But it is often the 1st thing removed by homeowners to save cost.
