Gas or Electricity? Which is Better?
Using gas or electricity for your house is a debate that will never be answered.
You can ask 10 IDs, all 10 will give you different opinion.
Most homeowners use gas to save money, while most don’t because they scared it explodes (really).
So here’s our hot take:
Both these reasons (save money / might explode) don’t matter at all
Use gas only if the benefit of the individual gas appliances matters to you

Let’s first talk about the “cost-savings”.
1) Use gas can save money..?

Yes, you save. But the question is how much?
Last week, CNA released an article with electricity and gas tariffs going up in Q3 of this year.
Look at these excerpts:
Unit cost are not thattttt different
Electricity = $0.31/kWh
Gas = $0.23/kWh
A 4‑room household spends around $100/mth on electricity (don’t ask me why so low)
Then now you think how much are you really saving by switching to gas?

Plus the government keeps handing out the U‑Save I-Save utilities vouchers - sometimes you barely even pay for utilities.
But of course, if every cent matters to you, gas will always be cheaper. But largely, the savings aren’t game changing.
2) Gas more likely to explode..?
I get where people are coming from ok but partially we ownself scare ownself la.
So I went to google the number of gas cases vs electrical, and see what I found.

I could only find ONE published case of a gas explosion.
But electricity? Wayyyyyy more.
Of course, partially is because households use more electricity.
But point is both carry risks - it comes down to individual responsibility, and to say gas more likely to explode isn’t really a fair statement.
3) Why I Didn’t Use Gas
I didn’t want decision fatigue.
It’s a personality thing where I feel having to make more decisions for immaterial outcome is not worth.
If we were to consider gas, we had to consider for EACH APPLIANCE whether gas or electricity is better.
This is so tiring.
That’s why I said if the benefits of the individual gas appliances doesn’t matter, stick to electricity across the board.
4) What’s this “benefit of individual gas appliances”?

Gas is used for three things: Water heater, Dryer and Hob.
For each of them, there are certain benefits of using gas.
We’ll cover each of these in-depth down the road.
But let us show you briefly what we mean by “if these benefits are material to you, only then should you use gas”.
A. Water heater
Gas Heater
Water Tank (Electric)
Many prefer gas heaters because they are super sleek vs the bulky eyesore storage tanks.
If aesthetics is important for you, then yes consider this tank.
(I really like it btw, just not enough).
B. Dryer
City Energy says gas dryers save time.
If that matters to you, go for it.
C. Hob
If you cook a lot, and believe that the authentic wok hei smell can only be achieved with gas, then use it.
TLDR
Don’t care what other people think when deciding gas or electricity.
Definitely don’t think that using gas will save a lot of money, or that it will explode.
Gas can be used for water heater, dryer and hob.
What matters most is how material the benefits of each gas appliance is to you.
And only you can answer that question.
