The Downsides of Limewash
Limewash is extremely popular with homeowners these days, and for good reason.
Commonly seen even in cafés and boutique shops, it adds depth and texture compared to a plain painted wall.
But one thing that is commonly not talked about for limewash is the risk that comes with it.
Especially when it comes to the execution.

Here’s the main catch - limewash needs to be executed to perfection in 1 shot. They are not easy to patch.
The owner of this 4-bedder resale condo noticed a small crack in his limewash-ed wall (crack not due to limewash fyi).
He then called the painters to fix it, but you see what happened after the first attempt.
This ugly dark patch appeared.
So they came back a second, third and fourth time and it was still uneven.
In the end, they decided to just redo the entire wall cause it was way easier for them.
Why This Happens
BEFORE you blame the contractor, this is genuinely a common problem with limewash.
It is “seasoned” using a mixture of paints to the homeowners’ liking.
This means that your “grey limewash” can easily be different from your friend’s “grey limewash”.
The brush strokes to create the effect can differ as well, kinda like your pen signature iykwim.
The end result is that it is very hard to re-create the same mixture if things go wrong.
That is why it needs to be executed to perfection in 1 shot.
Then How?
For homeowners looking for limewash, it is thus important that you check if the initial limewash mixture is to your liking or not.
If you don’t like it after they have concocted it, they will need to redo, which adds to the costing.
You can’t patch it.
TLDR
Limewash adds depth and character to walls, but it is very difficult to patch. It will look uneven and blotchy.
Homeowners, try to “verify” that the colour of the mixture is to your liking first before they apply.
Else you will incur additional cost, and frustrations along the way!!
